Week 1 - What the book is about

Tomorrow, When the War Began is set around the small town of Wirrawee. Some of it is also set in the nearby mountainous area called Tailor's Stitch and the camp area called Hell. John Marsden says some of these locations are based on places in the Australian Alps, but that most settings "could be found in any Australian State." The year it is set is unknown, though most would say 1993, which is when the book was first published. We do know that the date is in the Christmas holidays. The central conflict is that Australia has been invaded by a mystery country, whose name we are never told.
The main characters who are involved are eight teenagers, who go on a camping trip. When they come back, they discover that everyone in their town is being held prisoner at the local show ground and that Australia has been invaded. The story is mainly about them hiding from the enemy and fighting back. The story ends with one of them getting shot and being driven off to seek medical assistance. The others stay back at their main camp. Another six books in the series shows that this conflict is not over.
